My Typical Week
A typical work week for me is Wednesday through Monday with Tuesday off and races on Thursday through Sunday. I usually take one day off a week. However, there are times when I will travel to other tracks and race there for certain races. When I have a day off, I do have a few things I like to do.
First I like to clear my head. Now that I am more of an established jockey, I like to leave work and leave all my work business at work.
When I was first starting out this wasn’t easy because I was working so hard to get a good start and establish a well known career in the industry. For the most part I can leave work with my head cleared and ready to relax. But there are times when something didn’t go exactly how I planned for it to go. I then will think about it and go over and over it in my head.
When I am riding a horse I try not to let myself get nervous, stressed, or anxious. The horses can sense if you get scared or if you are getting nervous. If you start acting like this or let something get to you they will start to react to it. I try to keep my head clear right before a race so most of the time I am thinking of something completely off of the horse racing part. For example, I may think about what I am going to make for dinner that night or maybe something I am going to do after work, little things like that.
On my days off I really just like to take it easy and relax. My boyfriend, Anthony, and I really like to watch movies. Anthony got me started on watching the old movies, like the black and white ones from the 40s and 50s, so we watch a lot of those movies. I notice now that we watch a lot of movies that seem to have some sort of connection between us or relates to something going on in our lives. My agent, Penny, even mentioned a movie the other day that she felt like her life was going like.
When it comes to the other typical things someone does on their days off I do about the same. I really don’t shop much because I really have everything I need. Really a person can only wear so many jeans and back shirts. When friends or family from Sweden come to visit, I usually take them shopping because that is something they want to do. The majority of the time of my days off is spent just relaxing. I like to recharge and gear back up for another week of racing. I love my job, I love horses and I love that I get paid to do what I love. It is a dream come true for me.
Fun Question: What did you want to become when you were little? A mounted police officer.
